Davis Polk is defending LG Electronics in a coordinated MDL federal antitrust proceeding in San Francisco. The cases encompass over 30 nationwide class actions, all alleging a global price-fixing conspiracy in the market for optical disk drives.

The defendants are leading global electronics manufacturers, including LG Electronics, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, and Philips. Plaintiffs seek to represent businesses and consumers who purchased optical disk drives and the computers, DVD players and other devices that contain them. They claim potential overcharges in excess of $1 billion.

Earlier this year, Davis Polk argued motions to dismiss on behalf of a group of defendants comprising LG Electronics, Samsung, Hitachi and Toshiba. On August 3, 2011, U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg granted the defendants’ consolidated motions to dismiss, noting that “the plaintiffs’ evidence didn’t come close to supporting the kind of sprawling conspiracy alleged.”
